Shannon Atherton earned her BS in Psychology from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. She then went on to receive her MS in Mental Health Counseling at Missouri State University. In addition to this, she has received certification and training in substance abuse counseling in the state of Missouri.
Shannon is a member of the American Counseling Association and the Association for Play Therapy.
Shannon has been working in the mental health field since 2004 and has gained experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of mental health and behavioral concerns. She has experience working with children and families involved in foster care, as well as working with parents in developing parenting skills. She has worked with several victims of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, and has training in working with PTSD and complex PTSD. While working on her MS at Missouri State University, she completed her internship at a location that focused on counseling juvenile sex offenders. She has also gained experience in working with children and adolescents who are gifted, as well as individuals with developmental disabilities. Additionally, she has worked with members of the LGBTQ community, and has received training in multicultural counseling.
